New Tools Targeting Critical Infrastructure Devices

The Department of Energy (DOE), the Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) have released a Joint Cybersecurity Advisory to warn of Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) cyber tools that impact critical infrastructure. APT actors have developed custom-made tools designed for targeting industrial control system (ICS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) devices. The tool would allow them to scan, compromise, and control affected devices if they establish any initial access to the operational technology (OT) network. The joint committee advises immediate action to protect these ICS/SCADA devices. This includes enforcing multifactor authentication for all devices whenever possible, changing passwords on a consistent schedule, and leveraging continuous OT monitoring to log and alert malicious indicators and behaviors.
